Commercial Fisheries Harvest Strategies

Formal harvest strategies are increasingly recognised as the most efficient path to ecologically sustainable and profitable exploitation of primary target species in commercial fisheries.  Many of Australia’s commercial fisheries, including several AFMA managed commonwealth fisheries, are at the cutting edge of harvest strategy development and application.

The Australian Government’s Harvest Strategy Policy and Guidelines (developed in an Australian regulatory context) are a comprehensive best practice guide to the development and use of harvest strategies.

Developed at much the same time as the HSP, the New Zealand Government’s Harvest Strategy Standard was developed for application to NZ fisheries that fall within their Quota Management System (QMS).  The HSS and its companion guidelines also provides contemporary best practice harvest strategy guidance for the management of commercial fisheries.
